Black Bears at Wintergreen?

Black bears. Be aware they can look very cute!

Black Bears. This cub looks so cute!

Are there Black Bears at Wintergreen?

Black bears do live in the mountains in this area. Do you think Black Bears scary?  Most people would probably answer yes to this question initially. However, as with any wild animals, as you learn more about them you realize they are not, in general, a danger to you. In fact the Black Bears are more scared of people and will tend to take off quickly if they hear people around. Usually, the black bears, with their amazing hearing, will hear people approaching and they will take off out of the way. You may not even see the bear as he disappears back into the woods.

Black Bear Cubs look Cute and Cuddly.

Black Bear cubs may look cute and cuddly, however keep in mind that a very possessive mother bear is likely to be near by. She will not take kindly to anyone coming between her and her cubs. This is a situation most experienced hikers know to avoid. Otherwise, in general, as long as you make a noise to let the bear know you are around (singing, talking, etc), they will usually stay well clear.

Never Feed Black Bears!

Black bears are highly intelligent  animals with an incredible sense of smell. They can smell potential food sources over great distances. They are opportunists, always looking for easy calories. This often leads hungry bears to dumpsters, garbage cans, or kitchens. When bears learn that garbage means food, they come back to it again and again. learning to associate humans and homes with food. Sadly this usually ends with the “problem bear” being euthanized. Thus leaving food around outside is a definite no!  Never leave food/garbage outside. Wintergreen is a Bear Smart community.

The Nature Center can Help

The knowledgable folks at the Nature Center can help teach you proper “bear behavior,” Learning that we are invading the bears natural habitat is important. However, it is possible to live in harmony if we make an effort and follow the basic wild animal ground rules. TWNF teaches ways to react and behave around these and other animals should you meet any on the trails. There are “bear bells” some people take on hikes so the bears will hear them approaching. The TWNF has new New Resident Orientation talks if you are going to live on the mountain.

Wildlife at Wintergreen Resort, VA

Wildlife in the Mountains

Chipmont are fun to watch

Chipmonk relaxing in the sunshine.

Wintergreen Resort is a wonderful place to live. Not only is the wild and untamed beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains awesome but the wildlife is fascinating. It is a Nature Lover’s paradise. One could watch numerous bird species from Hummingbirds to Golden Eagles, and animal species from Chipmonks to Raccoons, and Bobcats to Black Bears. Looking out of the window of a mountain home you may often see wild turkeys, deer and black bears wandering past if you are lucky.

Are there Wild Animals In Wintergreen?

There certainly are a lot of wild animals who live in mountain areas,  One of the tasks of the Wintergreen Nature Center is the observation and detailing of the wildlife seen in the area. Residents would often report on what animal they happened to come across on hikes and may even bring photographs, taken at a safe distance of course. Sightings of wildlife are usually timed and dated as to when and where the particular animal was seen. This list is usually on display at the Nature Center and updated daily. The Nature Center holds new resident orientation talks on many of these subjects. They introduce subjects such as Wintergreen wildlife along with the conservation of the land itself. The TWNF teaches ways to react and behave around these animals should hikers/walkers meet any wildlife on the trails. There are always knowledgable staff and volunteers willing to advise. The volunteer naturalists and professional staff of the The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen manage the 6,000 acres of wilderness to ensure Wintergreen remains a beautiful, popular place. And, it really is. Watch for the next post on Black Bears
