Wineries Near Wintergreen

Looking for something special to do while visiting Wintergreen Resort?  Not familiar with the area and interesting things to do in the community?  Here’s a great idea.  There are six wineries offering a taste of their wares, beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Rockfish Valley, and lovely pastoral settings in which to enjoy your “taste.”  All this within a 30 minute drive of the Resort.

You can bring your own picnic or purchase picnic foods at some of the wineries.  Your dog is welcome too.  Here is a list in driving order from Wintergreen Resort:

Wintergreen Winery – situated on the road to Wintergreen Resort is a great place to have a family picnic along the Rockfish River.  In addition to its other wines, Wintergreen Winery also offers a raspberry and apple wine along with cheese and gourmet foods in their gift shop.

Hilltop Berry Farm & Winery – situated in the Rockfish Valley between Afton and Nellysford was originally a “pick your own blackberry” farm which expanded into a winery in the late 1990’s.  Being one of the first wineries to offer True to the Fruit Virginia Wines and historical honey meads, it’s worth the “taste”.

Flying Fox Vineyard – was named for the weather vane on the roof of the main building.  As evening approaches, it appears that the fox is flying over the vineyard.  A family-owned enterprise offering an avenue for local artists to exhibit their work.

Cardinal Point Vineyards – open year round and also located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge in Afton.  This a family operation that opened in 1983 and has a summer concert series and other special events you should check out.

Veritas Vineyard & Winery – a family operation that opened in 2002.  Situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, they offer bag lunches and cheese plates in case you forgot your picnic.  Their name is derived from Pliny the Elder’s, (the Roman Historian) observation regarding wine – In Vina Veritas – In Wine There Is Truth.  Take in the Blue Ridge Mountains as you sip some of their wine, and you may find that just maybe there is some truth to the statement.

Afton Mountain Vineyard – one of Virginia’s pioneer farm wineries with their oldest vines dating back to the 1970’s.  Owned and operated by local folks, their tasting room is open year round.

This might take two lazy Fall  afternoons, but so what, you’re on vacation!  Enjoy!
